In my case, two lines was enough.

Works as expected. Thanks for the tip. I used the three lines and it fixed my backspace/delete key oddities. I am connecting from Leopard to Ubuntu 8.04 (FYI)

You could probably set terminal emulation to vt102 and this would fix the problem.

Terminal > Preferences > Settings > Advanced > Declare terminal as > vt102

xterm-color causes interesting issues with pico/nano, vim, etc.

I've been having this same problem. Switching to vt102 emulation didn't solve the problem (and it gets rid of context coloring, not good for me).

The solution for me was simple enough, in the same part of the Terminal Preferences simply check the box: Delete sends Ctrl-H

Enclosing asterisks marks text as bold (*word*), underscore are made via _word_.
Standard emoticons like :-) and ;-) are converted to images.
